If I had a quarter for every time I was asked the question “should I get a website” I would be rich. But since I’m a nice person I decided the best thing to do was create a post that you could use as reference.

Why get a website?

The answer is simple. A website is to brand yourself. It has a wide appeal in a world that is run by technology. It provides easy access for anyone to see your work and an easy avenue for contact.

Who should get a website?

My answer to this would be anyone who’s serious about their work. A website is a professional way for anyone to view your work rather than directing people to twitter or facebook. Regardless if you are a writer, DJ, artist or photographer it’s important to have a professional website. If you aren’t as serious about your work my suggestion would be to get a blog. Many have started off with a blog and then decided to graduate to a website.

I can’t afford to pay for web hosting. Now what?

Before you count yourself out keep in mind that web hosting is not as expensive as most think. You are able to get web hosting from $7-$10 a month. To me that’s a very reasonable price, especially when you consider this an investment to your future. Alternatively, if you are not able financially to afford the web hosting you can get a blog. It’s a great starting point and then as I said earlier you can graduate to web site when you are financially able to do so.

Who should you get to design your site?

Choosing your web designer is probably the most important decision. You want someone who understands your vision and is willing to work with you and guide you on what will look good. Most importantly you want someone who is professional.

Ensure that your web designer sends you a detailed timeline of when the site will be completed. You should also receive a detailed list of what you will be getting with the money you are paying. Remember your web designer is bringing your vision to life so you should be working hand in hand to ensure your site comes out exactly the way you want.
