Swimming with sharks

January 19th, 2011

We are but a mere three weeks into the new year and already it seems like people have reverted to their old ways. I can see it already with the amount of people who have already stopped coming to the gym, and the people who have slowly stopped talking about their “grind” on face book and on twitter.

Here’s the important thing to remember you can talk as much as you want about what you plan to do but no one will believe you until you actually execute it. It takes discipline, ambition and drive to accomplish your dream or even to take that first step towards reaching your goals.

Over the holidays while watching the television I came across an interesting fact and it really resonated with me. Did you know that sharks have to continue to swim forward or else they die? Think about that for a minute and take it in. A shark has to continue to move forward or else it will die. Now I know you’re probably wondering what that has to do with us as humans. I truly think that the sharks have it right, think about if we adapted that mentality. What if we as humans weren’t allowed to have regrets or go backwards? What if we too would die if we stopped moving forward? Would this motivate more people to continue to press forward and quit with the crap talking and boasting?

Here’s the way I see it, we live in one of the most diverse and multicultural cities in the world. Toronto truly is a mosaic and a beautiful one at that. Our city alone is filled with 2.7 million people and growing more every day. The scary part about this is that of those 2.7 million about 2 million are claiming to be famous, or are a self proclaimed celebrity. This is further proved through social networks like twitter, myspace and of course facebook. With the success of a few home-grown celebrities like Drake and Melanie Fiona its easy to see why so many want to be successful, and no one is saying that they cant do it. However, its easier said than done – maybe this is why there’s the plethora of frauds in the city.

Always one to take the positive road, imagine now if all those people who are self proclaimed celebrities adapted our shark theory. Imagine if they had to progress and they had to continue to push forward- send out one more demo, record one more verse. What if they had to create one more website or take a few more pictures and write more words. I’m confident in saying that if this were the case we’d have one of the most successful cities in the world. Now if only we could master modesty…but I guess we have to crawl before we walk!
