Hoarders
Every week I sign on to twitter and without fail I see a mass amount of my followers from various parts of the world talking about a certain television show. No matter how disgusting, how creepy, how sickening and heartbreaking it is millions of us get caught up watching Hoarders and cannot stop. While the people on the show are hoarding material belongings it really made me think- is it still hoarding if we are holding on to emotions?
I’m sure that being an emotional hoarder can be just as detrimental to our health, not to mention our sanity and yet we continually do it. The question is why?
Just like the people on the show we hold on to emotions the same way that they hold on to their possessions. They are linked to a certain memory, a certain feeling and a certain era in our life.
Unfortunately, we don’t have the luxury of having a team of people come in and help us clear out the emotions that are holding us back from moving forward so how do we do it?
The first step would be to understand what emotional hoarding is. So if hoarding is the excessive collection of items with the inability to discard them, then emotional hoarding is the excessive collection of emotions with the inability to discard them.
The second step is to realise that this is in fact a problem.
The third step is to find out why you’re holding on to these emotions. Is it from a bad break up that you still haven’t gotten over? The loss of a loved one? Whatever the problem is you need to acknowledge what is the trigger and make a valid attempt to resolve it.
Just remember that to be completely healthy requires balance and health of the mind, body and spirit.
