Culture, History, Heritage and Mas Oh My!

April 14th, 2011

It’s no secret that I’m passionate about writing, but I also have a large part of me that absolutely loves my culture, my heritage and the rich history that embodies it. As a Trinidadian, part of my culture is carnival and it’s a special time of year that brings me utter joy!

It’s more than girls dressed half naked and gyrating (or wining as we call it) to the sounds of music. It’s about the rich history it brings, the beauty and story that the costumes tell. It’s about bringing family together and celebrating the positive message that the sweet sounds of soca divulge.

I’m lucky to live in a city that holds one of the largest carnivals in the world. Toronto Carnival formerly known as Caribana has been a vital part of the tourism in the city of Toronto for many years. Generating millions of dollars for the city and bringing in people from around the world to watch the beautiful display of costumes, architecture, and celebration of history.

Everyone in my family from grandparents to grand kids can be found taking part of the many festivities that happen this time of year. For the past six years my family has been a part of Mas Toronto one of the Group A bands and also one of the longest standing bands. For me our band represents class, elegance and most importantly a wonderful family dynamic.

This year our band’s theme is Mas In Atlantis: A Carnival Mythology. As part of the committee I can say without a doubt that the costumes are visually stunning and I cannot wait for the public to see them.

If you are interested in playing with us regardless of race, creed, background or location I guarantee you that you will have a wonderful experience from start to finish.

We launch our band to the public on May 6th, 2011.

Here’s the flyer!

Come out and prepare to be amazed by the spectacular costumes!

Michelle, I am very happy that you are promoting Mas Toronto, and the value of your culture. Your grand father will be very happy to know that you and your family are involved with Carnival in Toronto and keeping that carnival genes in our blood flowing from generation to generation..Thank you so much for all that you are doing to keep our carnival culture alive..Have a great day, and keep on writing!!! Sharon.

and dont forget, valued readers, @MsPaigeMusic will be co-hosting the event!

Michelle, love it! Although I am not West Indian, I grew up around the culture with 2 uncles who married into West-Indian families. I have learned a lot about the history of mas and various Carnival-related traditions but perhaps you can share a bit about the history of mas and the Trinidadian culture for those who are unfamiliar. :D (just another piece of work I’m givin ya!) lol xoxo
