Happy Mother’s Day!!

May 8th, 2011
Some say that Mother’s Day started in ancient Greece to honour Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. Other’s say that it was created in the early 1600’s as a tribute to Mary, the Mother of Jesus. One thing that we know for sure is that Mother’s Day is one heck of a special day. Alright so maybe I’m slightly biased because I am a mom of two but it goes so much further than that.

My experience with Mother’s Day has transitioned and grown, just as I have throughout the years. I went from making flowers and bookmarks for my mother as a child to receiving my own beautiful little creations from my daughters.
I remember feeling so proud and making sure to hide the gift I’d bring home from school, waiting with high anticipation all weekend for Sunday to come so I could reveal with pride the small token of love that I had created with my own little fingers. What I never understood was how my little token of love seemed to make my mom happier than the big token of love she’d get from my dad. Somehow it went from diamonds being a woman’s best friend to being a finger painted bookmark is a mother’s most prized possession.
I can stand firm and say that I truly understand it now that I have my own children. I have every card, every bookmark and every finger painting that I’ve gotten from my own daughter and yet after seven years they still manage to make me cry.
Mother’s Day isn’t just for mother’s though, after all as much as we hate to admit it giving birth doesn’t make you a mother right? So to single father’s, Godmothers, grandmothers and all those that have taken on the motherly role for a child we salute you today as well.
Yes Mother’s Day should be all year, but truthfully between birthday’s, Christmas, Easter and all the other holidays is it really too much to set aside one day to say THANK YOU to that special woman in your life? We’re women, we don’t read minds and even if you don’t pamper us with breakfast in bed and jewellery a hug and a whispered “thank you” will go a lot further.

Enjoy your day!

xoxo
