The Progression of an Idea

May 27th, 2011

Yesterday I spent the day at Universal Studios and I really enjoyed myself with my family. While most people go to Orlando to see Mickey there was one place that to me is the most magical place on earth – The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

As I saw the snow capped village of Hogsmeade and strolled through the streets drinking butterbeer it occurred to me that this all came from a book that thought alone had me more emotional than I ever thought I would be.

This amazing theme park all came from an initial idea in J.K. Rowlings mind, an initial idea that she choose to write down and share with the world. Ten years later there are now thousands of people daily that stroll these streets and walk through the idea that was once nothing but a fiction of her imagination. That is a remarkable thing. You see I am an avid reader as most writers are and I am a HUGE Harry Potter fan so to see these books come to life first on the pages and then the big screen and now to have it’s own theme park is nothing short of amazing.

Many have said that books are dying and the art of reading and writing books is a waste of time especially with technology. Yet here is an author who like many of us authors had been turned down time and time again by traditional publishers and yet by the grace of God and pure luck ( after all as a writer we all need a little luck to get published) she has created an empire.

As I shopped in Ollivanders and withdrew money from Gringotts I couldn’t help but to be inspired. If this is what’s possible from just one idea then who’s to know what I can produce. I don’t expect by any means necessary to create a franchise nearly as big but if I can make one person fall in love with books again then that to me is success.

It’s remarkable how only two days into my vacation I’ve found myself feeling renewed, inspired and more in love with writing than ever before.
