Taking Ownership of Your Success

August 18th, 2011

As I’ve begun my own journey towards being a full time author and motivational speaker I’ve come across many who are also new entrepreneurs fighting to claim the title of success.

I got to thinking about what it takes to truly be successful. Is it hard work? Determination? A publicist or literary agent? What are the factors that determine how successful we are destined to be? Then it dawned on me. Success isn’t something that is deserved – it’s earned.  Along with earning success and working hard towards it you need to take responsibility and ownership for your own path.

I’ll admit that over the last couple weeks I’ve been dealing with some personal issues and as a result haven’t had the time to put into my brand as I normally would. Luckily for me I have a wonderful publicist who works just as hard as I do to ensure that my brand is a perfect representation of me. This is all fine and dandy except over the weeks I started to notice a decrease in activity both on my site, fan page and it even went as far as losing twitter followers. This was all a direct reflection of my lack of presence on the front lines of my business.

It wasn’t from the lack of effort on my publicist’s part because she was as usual going above and beyond the call of duty. I came to realize though that I am the face of my brand. It is my tweets, my blog posts and my updates that attract people to me. Therefore it is my responsibility to ensure that my brand is being represented in the best way possible. It is my duty to engage my readers and followers because after all they’ve come to rely on me just as much as I’ve come to rely on them.

Knowing that someone is relying on you or counting on you is the greatest motivation to keep going even though your strength and motivation may be waning.

It’s a remarkable feeling to know that you are the variant in the outcome of your success. Whether you choose to acknowledge this is completely up to you but the sooner you realize that the work you put into building your business is what you will get out the sooner you can be well on your way to embracing success.
