“Let your dreams be the reality you face every day”

The Power of One is a campaign aimed at inspiring women young and old alike to achieve their dreams. Using educational tools as well as verifiable truths in a safe environment we intend to arouse the desire to attain overall health in the mind, body and soul.

It’s no secret that for hundreds of years, pressure has been placed on women to look flawless. While the pressure may be the same the methods of dealing with this pressure has changed dramatically. Women and girls alike have gone from wearing corsets to change their appearance to now starving themselves. We’ve gone from dealing with mild discomfort to harming ourselves in a matter of decades. The most alarming part is that as the decades progress the age of girls with self esteem issues continues to get younger.

As adults and role models there are things that we can do to help create a healthy state of mind for our children and also adapt it for ourselves. Our children are easily influenced by the environment around them. If the environment around them is negative then they too will adapt a negative mantra that will no doubt follow them well into their adult years if not their whole life. So the only option is to create a positive and self assuring environment to nurture and grow our children in.

We spend the first three years of a child’s life teaching, loving and nurturing them as those are the crucial years. However, as they grow older the amount of time spent with our children begins to decline. The lines of communication begin to seize up and the older the child gets the more strained the relationship becomes.

So while you can argue any of the above statements, you cannot argue with the facts and the statistics are alarming. For example:

  • Girls self esteem peaks at the age of 9 and after that takes a significant nose dive
  • 75 % of 8- 9 year olds said the like the way that they look. That number dropped to 57% by the time they hit age 12 -13
  • 80% of grade 8 girls said that they have been or currently are on a diet
  • In Canada, over 26% or 1.6 million children are considered overweight or obese and the rate is increasing.
  • Children suffering from obesity are at an increased risk of low self-esteem – Obesity can be linked to chronic health problems.
  • Low self esteem can be associated with poor mental health later in life.

The school aged years are the most important for teaching our girls about a healthy body image, healthy eating habits and to deflect any negative influences that they may have absorbed. This is why in January we will be launching a school tour to focus on raising young girls self esteem. Using games, facts and guest celebrity speakers we want to inspire young girls to have a better overall vision of themselves.

Upon the successful launch of the school tour we will be taking time to tour through various women’s shelters. Using age appropriate tools to inspire the women to start fresh and regain a positive self image of themselves.

After fighting her own self esteem issues and battling an eating disorder, author Elle Seon is the perfect candidate to lead the seminars and speak to the girls. Her personal experience and story of survival is truly inspiring. She encourages girls to embrace their natural talents to exceed in life and follow their dreams.

We cannot change the world all at once, but if we can inspire one girl and give her the power to control her own destiny then we have been successful.

What better way to heal through physical, psychological and emotional pain then to hear a woman’s story of overcoming just that? This is how the residents at Dr. Roz’s  Healing Place were positively affected by Michelle Seon’s story of triumph.

On behalf of the residents at Dr. Roz’s Healing Place, it is a pleasure to express my sincere thanks to Michelle for sharing her story. Not only was it able to validate many of the women’s own personal experiences of violence but her story was also influential in helping the women recognize that there truly is a light at the end of the dark tunnel that they have been navigating.

Michelle talked about the importance of leaving an abusive situation and how powerful an act of that kind really is.  Through her message, Michelle validated that each and every woman in attendance should celebrate their act of taking the power back from their abusers – a powerful message that survivors of domestic violence often forget to consider.

Michelle talked about the importance of reconnecting with people who can provide positive emotional support as a survivor transitions into a place of safety and security.  Although recognizing that it can be difficult to trust others after a history of pain, Michelle encouraged the residents in attendance to do everything in their power to surround themselves with positivity in order to remain grounded.

It is so important for survivors of violence to be surrounded by positive role models who exist in order to say “I have overcome” and “I am okay”.  Michelle Seon represented that positivity during her visit to Dr. Roz’s Healing Place and she instilled hope in the lives of 15 women who, at one point in their lives, did not know they could ever be in a place of safety.

Michelle possesses a special gift of having the power to inspire positivity into the lives of her audience through her story of triumph.  On behalf of the 15 women in attendance during your speak, I would like to thank Michelle for sharing a piece of her heart with us.  She is truly an inspiration to any person who is unable to find the joy in a painful or unhealthy situation.

Once again, on behalf of Dr. Roz’s Healing Place, thank you.

Sincere Regards,

Leeann Trevors
